Christchurch Travel Guide - Sights to See

by | |
Located on the South Island, Christchurch is one of New Zealand's most charming small cities. It is considered the most English city outside of England. Christchurch also has, perhaps, the loveliest gardens in New Zealand. The International airport is 7 miles from city center.

Cathedral Square: This squares stands at the very heart of the city and all main streets radiate from it. Of course the Cathedral is here, but more importantly, it's the best people-watching in the world. There's a Speaker's Corner similar to London... with some stormy debates, and some real "kooks"... some of the city's local characters, lovers, musicians, street performers. You'll want to sit and watch for hours... as they watch you. Dozens of the friendly people of Christchurch will engage you in conversation. It's here that you'll be introduced to the city's official wizzard. There used to be a "Bird Man" who came and fed the birds each day. He became so well known that there's a plaque dedicated to him today.

Town Hall: A cultural complex containing a Concert Auditorium, a Theatre, and a Restaurant... and a nice fountain in a reflecting pond.

Canterbury Museum: An entire street after the style of the 1850's.

Botanical Gardens: New Zealand plants, azalea and rock gardens... lovely park with the Avon River flowing through it. First rate!

McDougall Art Gallery: Classic paintings of the Maori... plus the works of two New Zealander's Lindauer and Goldie. Not too exciting!

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve: Contains the largest collection of birds and animals in the South Island.

1/2 day city tour: You'll see the highlights of the city, and will drive into the hills for lovely views of the harbor... and have a stop for "high tea" along the way. The people of New Zealand are so honest and dependable that their advertised tours will depart on time... Even if only two people show up... and still there's no tipping.
